DENTAL IMPLANTS

Dental implants are small titanium posts that are placed into the jawbone where teeth are missing. They are a long-term solution to missing teeth and are the closest option to replacing natural teeth.  If properly cared for, dental implants can last a lifetime.

Dental implant placement is a team effort between an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and a restorative dentist. Here at Sherwood Oral Surgery we perform the implant surgery, initial tooth extractions, and bone grafting if necessary.  After the implant has healed and integrated to the bone your restorative dentist makes the permanent crown. Your dentist will also make any temporary prosthesis needed during the implant process.

What are Dental Implants?

A dental implant restoration is composed of these three parts:

  • A titanium implant that fuses to the jaw bone through a process called osseointegration.

  • An abutment, which is the portion of the implant that rises above the gum line.

  • A crown fitted atop the abutment to give the appearance of a natural tooth.

Depending on a patient’s needs, one implant could replace a single missing tooth while two or more implants can serve as a stable support for the replacement of multiple teeth.

Advantages of Dental Implants

Dental implants offer several advantages compared to conventional dental prostheses for replacing missing teeth.

  • Unlike removable partial or complete dentures dental implants offer a fixed prosthesis that does not come in and out of your mouth

  • Unlike conventional fixed partial dentures (bridges) implants are able to replace a missing tooth without needing to grind down and possibly compromise the health of adjacent teeth

  • Dental implants help preserve facial bone and esthetics by preventing the jaw bone from shrinking once teeth are missing
